Academy at the Lakes’ 12th annual production, Oliver! The Musical was a major hit at the Center for the Performing Arts at Wesley Chapel High School. A production company with over 200 students from  kindergarten to seniors wowed the pack house with their singing and acting abilities.

Faculty, students and parents joined forces to create the stage, and the hand made costumes. The orchestral music was directed by Mark Heller and Katherine Vargas. The production was overseen by director Chris Holcom (Academy faculty, Jobsite Theater actor-director) and producers Morse and Gary Compton.

Oliver! The musical is based on Charles Dickens novel "Oliver Twist," The story follows little Oliver, an orphan and his misadventures in 18th Century England. As the story begins, young Oliver (senior Ali Buckman) is seen working at an orphanage. Following another disappointing, yet predictable, evening meal of gruel, the orphans are still very hungry. Oliver's journey outside of the orphanage begins when he has the audacity to ask for more. This error in judgment leads to Mr. Bumble and the Widow Corney (Cody Diaz and Alexis Setteducato) taking him out into the street and selling him to the local undertaker, Mr. Sowerberry (Conor Zhang). "Unfortunately, Oliver finds his new home as hostile as the last, and he makes the desperate decision to run away. He eventually makes his way to London where he meets The Artful Dodger (Sara Dobish) who is eager to introduce him to a new and exciting life as part of Fagin's (Jason Pitcairn) gang. The next day, he meets Nancy (Shannon O'Donnell), who shows him some motherly affection and tries to protect him." Photos and videos of this event by Anthony V. Masella Jr of OurtownFLA.com

John Castelamare will be
the new Football Coach for the Wildcats.
By Faith Jordan of OurtownFLA.com

Academy at the Lakes Head Master Mark Heller announced on March 23 that John Castelamare will be the new Football Coach for the Wildcats. Castelamare has been the Head Football Coach at Wesley Chapel High School since the school opened eleven years ago but had to retire because of the DROP (Deferred Retirement Option Program).

Coach Caz, who went to Don Bosco Prep School, is really excited about the new opportunity and hopes to expand the Academy at the Lakes football squad from a 6 man team to an 11 man team.  What many people don’t realize is that needy children who are smart could have an opportunity to attend the school.

He is very impressed with Academy at the Lakes in many respects and looks forward to this new path in his life. His daughters-one a senior at USF, and one a sophomore at FSU are also sports enthusiasts.

As far as the Mr. and Miss Wesley Chapel, which is a popular body building competition, the current and new coaches at Wesley Chapel High School will have to carry on the tradition.

Coach Caz not only started with Wesley Chapel High School, he also started with the first senior class at Ridgewood High School and started their popular Mr. and Miss Ridgewood body building competition. Who knows if the tradition will continue in some format at Academy at the Lakes. But they sure are lucky to land Coach Caz.

Head of School, Mark Heller, will be the target of more than 50 water balloons as the high school Honors Physics class takes aim at him during this year’s Projectile Motion Extravaganza.  The fun begins at 8:45 am on Friday, April 17 on the McCormick Campus west lawn.  Mr. Heller will anchor his boat approximately 100 meters from the school’s shoreline on Myrtle Lake.  Student teams will use a lacrosse goal outfitted with a sling to launch the balloons at their target.  Each team will adjust the velocity and trajectory of the balloons to get closer and closer to a direct hit!

In this “hands-on” experiment, students will determine the correct angle and speed needed to project an object a specific distance.  Students also learn first-hand how the forces of gravity affect an object’s path.

Mr. Heller emerged victorious last year with no direct hits.  Will he stay dry this year?  This year’s student teams are more determined than ever to make sure he doesn’t.

The House System Field Day

In the tradition of preparatory education the House System is an important part and feature of an Academy at the Lakes educational experience. Students and their families are assigned to one of four K-12 Houses - Peregrine, Kestrel, Osprey, and Nighthawk. During the course of the academic year many events and traditions unique to each House occur. The House Field Day event engages all the Houses in field events and competitions designed to build a sense of community and leadership. Each of the Houses is composed of students in grades K-12 who compete with each other in foot races, relays, games, an opening parade, and other related events. The Opening Parade is a sea of color - all students wearing the color of their House in preparation for the day's events. Observers view high school seniors holding the hands of Kindergarten students within their House. Healthy competition and a strong sense of community abounds! The House System is unique to Academy at the Lakes and the results of building community in this manner are very significant.

Academy at the Lakes vs Hillsborough Baptist Playoff Game

Friday nights play off game between Academy at the Lakes Wildcats and Hillsborough Baptist Lions was again a very exciting and close contest.  The home team Wildcats got on the board first when Academy took control of the ball on the Lions 16 yard line.  After a couple of incomplete passes, Tyler Palmer took the ball up the middle for a 16 yard T.D. run. Hillsborough fought back and tied the score 6-6 on a 10yard T.D. pass. In the second quarter a couple passes by Freddy Santory set up a one yard T.D. run by Shane Arbet, for a 13-6 Wildcat lead.

Before the half, Academy took a 19-6 lead on an 8 yard pass to Ross Braddock.  Hillsborough stayed focused and with the help of a penalty was able to complete an 18 yard T.D. pass with no time remaining, to cut the half time score to 19-12.

The rains came to start the second half, but early in the third quarter Hillsborough tied the score at 19-19.  Regulation ended tied, and Academy took the ball in overtime with four downs from the 15 yard line.  A couple of false start penalties moved the ball to 3rd and 23 for the Wildcats.  On third down Freddy Santory hooked up with Ross Braddock for the winning touch down.  Academy held the lions on their four tries for a 25-19 overtime win.  Academy travels to Winter Haven to face Haven Christian on Saturday, Nov 4th for a 2 PM contest. This will be the first High School 6-man tackle football Florida State Championship game! Academy at the Lakes and Florida make their six-man tackle football debut

Academy at the Lakes, in Land O’ Lakes, ushered in a new era in the schools history and in Florida’s history, by playing in their first six-man tackle football game on Friday, August 18th at their home field on the corner of state road 41 and Central Avenue, one mile south of Hwy. 52.  Six-man football is played much like regular football, with a few changes, making for an exciting contest.  The game is ideal for smaller schools.

In Friday’s battle against Hillsborough Baptist from Seffner, the Academy Wildcats fell behind midway through the first quarter 8-0.  The hard-hitting contest was exciting as the Wildcats took the lead by halftime 18-8, and added another TD early in the third quarter to increase the lead to 25-8.  Hillsborough added another score in the fourth period to make the final score 25-15.  Daniel Kwitko caught two passes for touchdowns and Tyler Palmer ran two in and threw one TD to Kwitko.  Ross Braddock led the defense with three interceptions.  All around it was an aggressive game by both teams and a good team win. The Academy’s next game is Friday August 25th at home against Lighthouse Christian from Kissimmee.

Academy Families and Faculty:

Friday night’s football game was amazing.  Coach Arbet and his staff had the kids ready and fired up to begin the season. Once they shook the jitters off, things went well.  The final score was 25-14, the Wildcats over Hillsborough Baptist.  It was wonderful to see so much support for the program, and equally gratifying to have so much help. I want to thank everyone for all his or her efforts.  Events like Friday don’t happen without many people contributing, and I thank everyone!  Best of all we get to do it again this Friday when the Wildcats take on Lighthouse Christian at 7:30 in a home contest.  Thanks again for everyone’s contribution. Bob Kamps

Academy at the Lakes vs Lighthouse Christian. Week 2

In the Academy’s second home game, which was against Lighthouse Christian Phoenix from Kissimmee, the Wildcats took an early 18-0 lead in the second quarter. The first score occurred on a Tyler Palmer run after a drive by the Wildcats. A long touchdown pass to Daniel Kwitko from Freddy Santory and a fumble recovery by Kwitko that was run in for a TD before half were the big plays.

The Phoenix fought back in the second half with a fumble recovery for a TD and another score to cut the lead to 18-12.   Lighthouse threatened the second half, but the Academy defense each time turned them back.  The game was hard fought, but marred by many fumbles.  The Wildcats visit Haven Christian this Fri in a duel between two undefeated teams

Academy traveled to Haven Christian in what promised to be an exciting match up between two undefeated teams.  Academy found the end zone first, driving down the field with Tyler Palmer running it in for the first score. Palmer ended the game with 208 yds rushing. Academy had the opportunity to go up by two touch downs before half time but Daniel Kwitko was hit out of bounds at the one yard line after a long run on a reception. Kwitko wound up with 78 yds receiving and Ross Braddock added 40.  Freddy Santory ended the game with 83 passing yds. After a penalty and fumble, Haven took control of the ball.

Haven had some big plays that put them up for good.  A kick off and punt were run back for scores.  Academy had a chance at the end of the game trailing by 7 with less than a minute to go, Haven had a forth down inside their 10 yd line.  With 70 yards to go all the Wildcats had to do was hold for one more play and they would have a few chances to score, but Haven Christian broke some tackles and ran it in for the final score 41-27.

Academy at the Lakes vs Hope Christian

In this week’s game against Hope Christian at Kissimmee, our Academy Wildcats started the game off on fire after a short weather delay.  After shutting down Hope, the Academy took control at Hope Christian’s 21 yd line.  Three running plays later Tyler Palmer put Academy on the score board. He also ran in the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

Shane Arbet added another TD in the second quarter, with Palmer running in the extra point for a 14-0 lead.  Hope shut down the Academy the rest of the way and added a touch down of their own, on a long pass play.  The final score was Academy 14 -Hope Christian 6.
