University Community Hospital's Long Term Acute Care Hospital at Connerton

UCH's Long Term Acute Care Hospital at Connerton had its 2-year anniversary on March 17th, but celebrated with patients and caregivers on June 23. Patients who had gone through very serious accidents and life threatening illnesses were there that night to celebrate they had come through their ordeal stronger and still full of life. There were dignitaries in the audience; surgeons, nurses and other caregivers on hand, but it was the faces of the patients who had come through difficult times and now with smiles on their faces, could celebrate with their families and those who took such good care of them, that stood out. LTAC Hospital which started out with a handful of employees in 2009 now has 160 or more employees, mostly Pasco residents themselves. They continue their inspired work with those patients when their need is so great in order for them to come out of their experience both changed for the better.

Plantation Palms Golf Club Cornhole Tournament for Charity

Story By:  Glenn G. Gefers

New Owner's Jayson Ray, Mitch Osceoh, and Steve Mc Donald of Plantation Palms Golf Club hosted their first annual cornhole tournament on Saturday June 25, 2011 on the driving greens for charity. There sponsors consisted of Ierna's Air, Beef O' Brady's of 54 Land O Lakes, Yuengling, PRP Wine International and Able Copier services. This is going to be a new event that will be held each year during the week of irrigation of the lawns on the golf course.

The event lasted for a good 6 hours with 50/50's and door give away. Gifts ranging from Mc Guire's, Sage Salon, GPS Pools, LifeStyle's, Golf cart Depot and much more. Vendors and sponsors grouped together to help support a very important and local charity (The Pasco County Foster Adoptive Parent Association Inc.).

The new owners of the golf club have a community mission statement they want all to know and that's (A New Attitude) with family and residents on mind where no one is judged just welcomed.  Their new attitude is something they believe strongly in and want their community to know about, from charities of local and far as of one to speak of the Native youth program www.FNGA.com that they build golf courses for all around the U.S. that don't have the privileges of the game.

The thing's that they are looking for in the golf club now is one with the Community, and Change. They will be offering youth programs and seniors, as well as couples golf events. They want to keep things fresh for their community, from their Friday night dinners to events like these and other's.

 Ribbon Cutting for Collier Parkway
& Parkway Boulevard Opening

Commissioners Henry Wilson, Pat Mulieri and Ted Schrader (left) cut the ribbon on the 4.3 million dollar Collier Parkway two mile extension project routing north bound traffic to Ehren Cutoff that also opens up a back door to the Dupree Lakes subdivision. Also pictured (right) are are Pasco County Attorney Jeff Steinsnyder, County Administrator John Gallagher, Dave Klima of Beazer Homes, builder in the Dupree Lakes subdivision and Bipin Parikh, Assistant County Administrator. Jennifer Crosby, Principal of Pine View Middle School and Judith A. Cosh, Principal of Pine View Elementary School were delighted that the new road opening will divert traffic away from their two schools and ease safety concerns. However, demonstrating the serious nature of the new intersection at Hale Road and Collier Parkway, the brown car going east-bound on Hale Road, with a stop sign, passes in front of the blue car going south-bound on Collier Parkway, even though the blue car has the right of way with no stop signs. Many local citizens are concerned that after 20 years of the drivers on Collier Parkway having to stop and the drivers on Hale Road getting to drive through, switching stop signs without any traffic lights may be inviting a major accident. Pasco County Officials said there is a warrant study under way to determine whether or not a light will be installed.

Gulf Storms Batter Pasco Homes

Flood County Roads and Shatter Trees
Mike Ciccarello spent an entire career helping people cope with natural disasters before retiring from Pasco County Fire Rescue late last year. Thursday, he found himself in the middle of a nasty storm. Story from My Fox Tampa Bay

"I've been through a lot of storms and been involved in a lot of storms, and this one was pretty serious," he observed. "It's probably one of the worst I've been involved in." Thursday morning, a powerful band of weather plowed through Ciccarello's Land O' Lakes neighborhood. Winds were strong enough to rip the chimney off his house. Winds went from almost nothing to -- I have a wind gauge in my backyard -- and it went from 61 to 87 miles an hour," he continued.

Land O Lakes Resident helps Sheriff catch a thief
Betty Stottlar of Land O Lakes was recently the victim of a purse snatching at our area KMart on Collier Parkway. As Stottlar was getting into her car on Feb 11, a man in dark clothing and a ski mask approached her car in broad daylight around 11:15am. Stottlar remained calm after the purse snatching and paid close attention to the details of the incident.

She noted the color and type of vehicle, she honed in on the license plate number and noted whether there were other passengers. She immediately went inside the store and called the Sheriff. Recalling important details of her incident, specifically the tag number, she was able to lead police straight to the suspect. Here are some important tips you should remember if you are a victim of an incident.

·        Remain calm and make mental notes of important details

·        don't be afraid to scream if someone is trying to rob or harm you

·        Park in lighted areas at night, park in areas where there are people during the day

·        Conclude cell phone conversations prior to walking to your vehicle & don't text! Be aware of your surroundings and don't be distracted to make yourself an easy target

·         If you see something suspicious, report it! Your tips may help solve a crime

·        Don't fight over your belongings. Your purse, wallet or car is not worth your life.

·        Call for help immediately

A Cup of Organic wants to be

 the community coffee shop

It doesn’t take long to realize that A Cup of Organic, a coffee shop in Lutz, isn’t your typical place to get a cup of Joe or a fancy coffee drink.

There’s live music there three nights of the week, free wi-fi and the menu offers a selection of organic coffees, teas, smoothies, milkshakes, sandwiches, muffins, cupcakes, cookies and other pastry items.
It has a clean, contemporary feel – and a relaxed vibe. It also wants to be more than a place where people rush through to get their morning java.

Melissa Ramacco didn’t set out to become a cake pop queen.
It just happened. Now, the Land O’ Lakes woman who drives a van with a “Got Cake” license tag keeps busy creating her clever confections for customers of all ages. When Ramacco, the owner of Island Girl Cakes, began her business she specialized in custom-designed and decorated cakes.
She got her start in the cake world before shows like Cake Boss, the Ace of Cakes and DC Cupcakes became the rage. Her foray into the field, however, was not part of any grand design.
She began simply with a cake expressing a New York Yankees’ theme that she made for her dad for Father’s Day. The response was so positive, she decided to begin taking orders to make cakes for family and friends. Read more Here

Land O'Lakes Moose Lodge
Fun Day for Kids

On Sunday July 25th the Land O'Lakes Moose Lodge had a Kids Fun Day, this event was held by the Women of the Moose. The event was to raise funds in support for one of our residents at Mooseheart. We have adopted a 5 year old “Sunshine Child”. The event on Sunday went very well, we had refreshments, a dunk tank, face painting, horseback rides, bounce house and many other games the kids could play and win prizes.

Also at 1 P.M. we were honored to have Sergeant Armstrong and Detective Batten from the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office who came by and the lodge donated 24 Tommy Moose, these are stuffed moose given to children in distress. From 5 P.M. to 7 P.M. we had a Christmas in July baked goods auction and we also sold raffle tickets for numerous donations given from people and businesses in the community. All in all we raised over $1,200.00. A great big thanks for all of those who participated.

One man's simple idea
saves Pasco County $100,000
One man who responded to tough economic times by thinking outside of the box has saved his county tens of thousands of dollars. John Leucke is in charge of supplies for Pasco Fire and Rescue. Leucke submitted a drug recycling idea to the county commission through the county's Cost Savings Award Program. His idea was approved.
