Magnolia Farm Breeds New Baby

Click picture to enlarge

Owner Sandy Haya Roser (also known as Ms. Roser at Lutz Elementary) has successfully bred and trained horses in the Lutz area for over 25 years. A new baby (pictured) was just born on Presidents Day, one week ago at the Farm. Sandy and her family travel all over the State showing their horses as well as giving private lessons at the Farm. They are gearing up for their Summer program soon and still hold after school basic riding and handling classes each week throughout the year. You can also purchase Hay and well mannered horses if you are in the market for a new addition to your family.

At 8, my daughter started taking riding lessons at the Farm and soon bought her first horse, a flea bitten gray mare that she absolutely adored. It taught her responsibility and patience, love and kindness and most of all, she thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It made such an impact on her that, as an adult now, she has chosen the Equine Industry as her chosen career field. If you would like to introduce your child to the world of riding and you are interested in learning more about classes, sales or boarding for your own horse, please contact Sandy Roser at Magnolia Farm at 948-2846 or the Barn phone at 813-948-6171.

Lutz Kids hit the Drag Strip

... Brother/Sister team from Lutz have been drag racing competitively together for the past five years.

Matt and Melissa Tramontana, a brother and sister team who grew up and live in Lutz drag race competitively at their hometown track in St Pete weekly. When Matt was just 16, he brought home his first speeding ticket just SIX days after he was given a Drivers License. His parents, Robert and Sheila, of Lutz along with his grandparents, Guy & Betty Hiatt, also of Lutz decided that if he wanted to drive fast, he needed to take his speed to a safe environment where there was no risk of injury to innocent people and he could go as fast as he wanted in a controlled environment. Matt’s grandfather picked up an old ‘80 Mustang 5.0 for $1500 and the family took Matt to the track. Matt began to take real interest in learning the techniques necessary to run what is known as “Bracket Racing” which is basically like a handicap in Golf. Those of you who are familiar with the show known as “Pinks” have a little idea of how this works. Cars compete side by side each round but the one with the slower car speed will get a “head start” over the other…at the Finish Line, the two cars should be very close to crossing at the same time. When I say very close, I mean within thousands of a SECOND.

Coming from a racing family that raced with names like Don Garlits and Art Malone on the same track that Matt and Melissa now run on has been a great family activity. When other parents wondered where their teenage sons were on Friday nights, Matt was having a blast perfecting his skills, meeting other drivers and getting to know their families. The racing community is a network of some of the best people you will ever run across. When Matt started racing at 16, Matt’s little sister, Melissa was only 11 and was very involved with animals and horses and competed in local Speed Horse events. After losing two horses to illness and injury, Melissa became interested in Racing while supporting Matts racing and asked if she could get seated in a Junior Dragster since she was not able to drive a regular car yet. Kids as young as EIGHT years old run these ½ scale models of the larger cars which run on alcohol engines much like your landscapers lawn mower.

They are, however, quite a bit faster! Melissa jumped into her first Dragster which was appropriately named “Cowgirl Attitude” and she quickly caught on to the fundamentals of racing competitively with the guidance of big brother Matt. Winning several events through the years and finishing 2nd by just one round of racing on the final night of competition in her last year as a Jr Dragster competitor, she moved on to a “door” car at 16 which is a ‘93 Ford Mustang 5.0 just like her brother. Both Matt, now 24 and Melissa, now 19 have been racing each weekend in St Pete as well as traveling to Bradenton, and Gainesville and have earned their way to the Eastern Division Finals held in South Carolina and Georgia since their very first year of Racing. Matt is currently leading the Points in the Sportsman class at Sunshine Dragstrip and Melissa was last years High School track Champion for her hometown track representing them at the Finals in GA racing her way into the Final Round of competition in the High School event last October, finishing as Runner Up. Matt will be competing in the Heads Up Madness Event this coming March 1, competing in the 7.50 class.

Matt and Melissa invite all LUTZ residents to come out for a fun FRIDAY night of racing action anytime to support them. For more information on Sunshine Dragstrip, visit www.sunshinedragstrip.com.  For more information on “Race the Strip, not the Street” or if your business is interested in sponsoring Matt & Melissa’s racing efforts, please contact them at 813-363-7672.

Land O’Lakes Little League Open Night

 Click >>> Here

The Land O’Lakes Little League held their Opening Ceremonies on February 21 at their new fields behind the library.  It was quite an evening with almost 1,000 local children enrolled in the baseball and softball programs in attendance with their families.  They enjoyed Hungry Harry’s Barbeque that was served by the Land O’ Lakes High School Varsity and Junior Varsity Softball Players, Raymond from The Tampa Bay Rays, fun, music courtesy of Brian Baxter, of Applied Sound Reinforcement, and some history lessons on how the Land O’ Lakes Little League got started.  In 1971, the Land O’ Lakes Youth League was formed.  Some of the original board members were Honored Guests at the Opening Ceremonies including the first President Ted Williams, the first Vice-President Curtis Law, and board members Earle Durham, Clyde Smith, Norman Blankenship, Vince Gallentine, Randy Osgood, and the first Ladies Auxiliary President local artist Kathleen Durham.  Some further trivia included Shirley Blankenship, who was part of the start of softball in 1974 throwing out the first pitch for softball on the new fields to her daughter and former Land O’ Lakes Little League player Mardee Blankenship-Harvey.  Land O’ Lakes High School teacher Kenny Blankenship brought the ball that he hit for the first homerun made at Land O’ Lakes Little League and it was thrown out by former Vice-President Curtis Law to Danny Smith (who was on the first Reds team and who caught the first pitch in 1971) for baseball.  Wow that was a great way to start at the new fields in the middle of all our growth! The Little League also paid tribute to some of their own who recently passed away.  Families of Thomas Kranendonk, who played many years of Land O’ Lakes Little League, Mike Reed, who was a Land O’ Lakes Little League Director, coach, and father, and Keith Esoff, whose sons play, were brought out to the fields in cars courtesy of Ferman Buick Pontiac GMC Chrysler Jeep Dodge at Cypress Creek, and there was a moment of silence. Jim Kranendonk, father of Thomas, and spoke about his son and said that he will always be on the fields. Trees will be planted at the park in their honor.  Honorary Mayor of Land O’ Lakes and former Land O’ Lakes Little League Board of Director Tina Garrison was an honored guest, The Pine View Drum Line and Jazz Band entertained, and awards were given out for last year to: Scott Hilgenberg-Manager of the Year, Dave Herbert, Board Member of the Year, Bridgett Redman, Team Parent of the Year, Larry Jasper, Humanitarian of the Year, and President Tom Ketterer and son Ryan Ketterer, Volunteers of the Year. The Committee for the Opening Ceremonies headed up by Karla Turcotte did a fantastic job starting up the newly enlarged complex.  Others on the committee include: Candy Mitchell, Laurie Tipton, and Lazanne Schmidt. Eric Handman emceed.  The evening was capped off with a Fireworks Show put on by Scott McNaull, of Land O’ Lakes, and Melrose Pyrotechnics,  For more information on Land O’ Lakes Little League, call 813-949-3867 or go to eteamz.active.com/lollittleleague.

Anti /War sign wavers in LOL

Click >>> Here

A group of citizens, so called Anti-War protestors, were more united by their vitriolic hatred of President George Bush. On the many fronts of our War on Radical Islamic Terrorism, the group held differing opinions. Regarding the Iraq front and a potential attack on Iran’s nuclear capacity, the group was united against it but the war on the Afghanistan front was more mixed. One vocal member of the group claimed the United States went to the Middle East because the Christian just wanted to kill a bunch of Muslims. Another claimed that the President took down the World Trade Center himself in order to start another World War. Although most of the cars driving by may not have agreed with them, the occasional horn honk was all they needed for encouragement of their cause, to have the entire Bush administration Impeached and removed from office. John Palm of Lutz, who lost an older brother in the Vietnam War, took to the corner of St Rte 41 and St Rte 54 to encourge citizens to contact their elected officials and demand that they impeach the President and the Vice President for their part in “Lying about Weapons of Mass Destruction” in order to get us into a war so President Bush and V.P. Cheney could get the oil for their associates in the industry. Palm’s concern that the administration was turning our country into a Nazi like atmosphere where our phone calls and E mails are monitored, prisoners are abused.
