East Pasco Pirates U16 B Perfect Season

East Pasco Pirates U-16 Boys Competitive

Has “Perfect Season” 2007-08

The Dade City community continues to excel in accomplished students and athletes for yet another year. Our 2007-08 U16 competitive soccer team was comprised of mostly 14yr olds that “played up” this past season due to picking up a couple older boys. The team has seen three coaching changes in three consecutive years, but appears to hold onto their chemistry, ending the season under Coach “Chano” Benitez and Pedro Garcia.

Although they had to enter the season in Division III, they easily went undefeated at 10-0! There were 46 goals scored by and only 7 scored on us.  The core group of boys has been together since about 2001. The team seems to get better every year, not-withstanding an obvious top goal producer. Many of the team members are capable of unselfish leadership when called upon. There are multiple goal scorers and a multi-talented roster that can fill any position whenever it is asked of them.

Injuries plagued the boys during the Region-C Cup tournament yet irregardless, the team went undefeated in Round I against Division I teams. Only after advancing to the finals did they suffer their one and only loss for the entire year.

The Dade City area is a small town and is limited on its resources compared to other clubs, so the teams necessary versatility seems to be “the glue” that holds them together with great results. The proud families and friends hope to see the boys pave their own successes in the next four years of high school, following the accomplished footsteps of the recent Pasco High Varsity soccer success which is also comprised of some of their older siblings. About half the U-16 boys had also opened their high school freshman year on the JV soccer team posting a 12-1 season, the only loss to a penalty kick. The majority of the team has a dual sports role with Track & Field events including Cross Country participation.

Our goalie Jeffrey Wilkes only gave up 4 goals the entire schedule. In the next school year 08/09 the competitive team will be back together once the remaining middle school boys start their freshmen high school year.

Core Group- Matt Boyle, Carson Brock, Dillon Dunbar, Eric Garcia, Anthony Plourde, Ryan Summner, Oscar Martinez, and

Miguel Mendoza.

Post Core Players:  Daniel Cano, Danny Corona, Ricky Corona, Alex Garcia, Will Fletcher, Jose Flores, Jose Paniagua, Jeffrey Wilkes, and Luke Singer (from LOL).

Pasco defender Alex Garcia gets takes the edge during the finals in Region Cup tournament which unfortunately ended up as the only loss for the entire season for his club.

Starkey Ranch hosts Native American POW-WOW

The Starkey family donated a portion of their land for the day to be used for a Native American Pow Wow complete with tribal dancing, music, storytelling, animals, food and Indian wares including handmade items, and crafts. The spokesperson for the event stated there is a Native American heritage festival somewhere in America every weekend.

The variety of dances performed all had a special meaning as well as the clothing that each selected for the dance. In one dance, each of the men selected various clothing to represent the different stages of the hunter and in one particular sacred dance performed by the women, a young girl was dancing for the first time representing a coming of age or womanhood. The event was open to the public and will return to the Starkey Ranch location in September. The Starkey Ranch is located on Hwy 54 near Gunn Hwy.
