- Recreational opportunities include bicycling, bird-watching, equestrian, hiking and picnicking. Equestrians must obtain a free day-use permit and carry proof of a horse’s current negative Coggins test. Camping will be available in the future. The preserve also has a model airplane flying field, which is managed by Bay City Flyers. Portable restroom facilities are located at the entrance and at the model airplane flying field. Click >>> HereSecond Amendment Club of America hosted their first Women's Class for 2009. It was a free class and all women were encouraged to attend. President of the club John DiGaetano, said "The Ladies learned about the different types of handguns, and how to handle and clean them as well as the correct type of ammo to use." DiGaetano continued, " The ladies really enjoyed the target and self defense shooting. It was our largest class ever. we had expected about 15 Women but 39 women showed up, and that's great. I plan on having another class in a few months so I will start taking names now of any women who want to take this class, and all the classes are FREE."

The District celebrated the grand opening of the Conner Preserve. The event included a ceremony, guided hikes, model airplane demonstrations, children’s activities, water quality monitoring demonstrations and more. The District purchased the 2,980-acre property in 2003 to preserve and restore this important natural habitat. The preserve’s entrance is located approximately 3.5 miles east of U.S. 41 on State Road 52 in Pasco County.

Academy at the Lakes host five Russian students
Academy at the Lakes hosted a “meet and greet” for five very special boys, Friday, January 2nd at the McCormick Campus Gymnasium. The five boys are Russian students in grades 5-8 who are participating in The Renaissance Project, a program designed to provide students from impoverished backgrounds with a strong American independent education. Academy at the Lakes will be their new host school beginning in the fall of 2009. They currently attend North Broward Prep in Coconut Creek, FL. Academy at the Lakes students and faculty were on campus to welcome the boys and their chaperone. Couple shared piece of dream

At top, keynote speaker Mildred Wilson, whose late husband was a Tuskegee Airman, presents a book to Alice Delgardo, head of the African American Club of West Pasco. In 1941, Elmer H. Wilson was drafted into an elite all-black unit of military pilots. The Tuskegee Airmen were praised for their work flying combat aircraft against the Nazis, but they faced discrimination at home. America's first black military airmen trained in a segregated unit, and after the war, they were excluded from World War II victory parades. Wilson's widow, 89-year-old Mildred Wilson of Tarpon Springs, said her husband never said much about the time he spent as a camera technician in the U.S. Army Air Corps. "They got called all kinds of names," Mildred Wilson said of the Tuskegee Airmen. "But it didn't bother (Elmer). That's what I see in Obama. He's cool and calm. He reminds me of the attitudes of the Tuskegee Airmen."
