Lutz Guv'na kick off Debate Party at
the Annual Lutz Civic
Association Event
Candidates for the 2011 Lutz Guv'na race, Mitch
Smithey, Annette Bellingar, Kevin Wright and Sheila
Tramontana, all in light hearted fun, debated each other
in the annual civic association event. The candidates in
the Guvnas race all had fun with the questions and
shared in the good food and drinks which was held at the
old Lutz School house. The Lutz Civic Association along
with the current Guvna Stephanie Ensor, will announce
the winner at the end of the Lutz Fourth of July
Celebration. To win the Guv'na race, a candidate must
make many promises they cant keep with money they dont
have, but the similarities between this and real
politics ends there. In this contest the candidate who
raises the most money earns the title, straight up, is
limited to a one-year term and all the money raised goes
to nonprofit groups in the Lutz community. Photos of

Lutz Fishing Captain saves life of
Driver who careens off bridge
Out on the water for a routine
day of fishing with his brother, sister and friends on
Easter Sunday turned into a life and death situation for
USCG Captain and Fishing Guide Robert Tramontana. About
3:23pm as they were idling near the Howard Franklin
Bridge deciding whether to call it a day or not, they
heard the crashing of metal and looked up to see a car
flipping into the water. Only about 150 yards away, they
quickly sprang into action racing to the vehicle to try
to help the passengers. The vehicle landed upside down
in about six feet of water. Less than 30 seconds passed
as they maneuvered the boat as close as possible trying
to stay off the rocky shoreline. Capt Robert dove off
his brothers boat swimming toward the vehicle. As he
swam, a black male popped up dazed and flailing as
Robert yelled to him trying to ask him whether he was ok
and if there were other passengers. Not coherent, he
instantly slipped beneath the surface. Roberts siblings
and friends began shouting to him that he had gone
under. Since Robert could not determine where he had
gone from his viewpoint in the water, he quickly jumped
up on the vehicle looking for a shadow or some sign of
the man. Spotting the man beneath the surface caught in
the current and being swept under the bridge, he quickly
pushed off the car extending himself and holding his
breath long enough to dive down and snatch him up off
the bottom. Pulling him to the surface, the man did not
appear to be conscious but Capt Robert would not give up
yelling for the man to "Breathe!" using a Heimlich type
hold, and swimming the man back to shore, the man began
choking and expelling alot of water and was able to
begin to breath on his own. One of the friends on board
the boat also jumped in to help Robert lift the nearly
200 pound man onto the rocks of the shoreline where he
was out of danger of drowning. Once the man was safely
onshore, Capt Robert returned to the vehicle, holding
his breath, dove inside the vehicle, sweeping the inside
in the murky water with his arms trying to find someone
who may be trapped. No other passengers were found in
the vehicle. Soon after, EMT divers and rescue
paramedics arrived to take over. Not your typical
fishing day for Capt Robert, his siblings and friends
who had the ability to remain calm, act quickly and to
be in the right place and just the right time by the
Grace of God. Resurrection Sunday hopefully has a new
meaning for accident victim, Charles White.

OurtownFLA.com's Sheila T accepts candidacy for Lutz
Guvna!
The Guvna Race for Lutz is a light hearted and "the
sillier, the better" attempt to raise money for local
small Lutz charities. The Civic Association promotes
this event and recruits candidates every year around
this time to respectfully run against each other. A
traditional GUVNA debate will be held at the Lutz school
house on May 14 from 2-4pm. Although Sheila will give us
BREAKING news stories on her shananigans very soon, she
wants us to know she is an open book and wanted to share
a little about her history here in Lutz. Sheila
Tramontana has been a Lutzian for over 28 years, having
raised the family she adores here. The family moved here
when Dale Mabry and Lutz Lake Fern was a two lane road
with a 4 way stop! She and her husband of over 30 years
started a child care business back in the 80s so they
could spend as much time as possible with their two sons
and daughter as they went through school. "Those were
some of the best memories of my life knowing that I
could provide a safe and happy environment for hundreds
of children to thrive in and look forward to." says
Sheila. "We had parents who would come to pick their
kids up and their children would tell them, NO go home
and come back later!" Sheila was able to attend every
function her children had at their own schools and was
able to enjoy seeing them develop friendships among the
other students she served. Sheila was Team Mom for
multiple years when her sons AND daughter played at Lutz
Little League just minutes from home. Working many a
shift in the concession stand, helping with fundraising
and pitching in wherever she could help. Her family made
lifelong friends there that they still stay in touch
with today. Her husband Robert served on the Board for
several years and umpired when he wasn't coaching one of
three teams. Sheila even helped coach T-Ball for a few
years when her daughter was old enough to play. Robert
has serviced the community loyally for almost 20 years
with his company Robert's Complete Lawncare. Sheila's is
very proud of her children who have been in the news
several times with their sporting activities. All her
children fish competitively on a professional team and
her son, Robert is a licensed charter fishing Guide. Her
son Matt and daughter Melissa drag race competitively
and Matt has led the Driver Points in his class since
the season began in January. Daughter Melissa was the
only female drag racer in her class in the top 10 last
season. Sheila was a member of the Lutz Patriots and
bonded instantly with Founders Barbara Mueller and her
sister Karen...She strongly supports those of the
military and does her best to find time to do what she
can for them. Having developed a love for photography
and writing during her high school years, she began
tinkering with the idea of starting her own photography
business which didn't happen until well after she closed
her Preschool and worked elsewhere for almost ten years.
Just as she was ready to begin working her business more
seriously, her mother in law was diagnosed with
Alzheimers Disease and she and her husband moved her in
with them to care for her. As a full time caregiver
since 2006, she has placed her life on hold to get her
mom in law through the mid stages of the disease.
Providing much the same environment as she did for the
children of her Preschool, therapeutic activities which
stimulate the brain and activities that promote dignity
and self-esteem provided a quality of life that her
mother in law Violet, needed during that period. She has
learned so much about the disease and its affects on
families, especially the primary caregiver that she has
begun speaking on the topic and is preparing to launch
her own Foundation which will help support all
Caregivers in a position of caring for another person
with a debilitating disease.
The Altruism Foundation is also a Foundation which
will focus on the needs of the community and its
residents and will help whenever needed. On the lighter
side, Sheila has chosen to take on the Guvna candidacy
to help promote local businesses and raise money for
charities in the hometown she loves. Please help support
Sheila during the next few months of the campaign with
your donations and help her accomplish her goal of
raising more money than anyone to win the Guvna race
which will be announced July 4 at the parade. Follow
Sheila through her journey here on OurtownFLA.com and on
her facebook page, Sheila T for Lutz Guvna! You will see
Sheila all around town wearing her purple sash in honor
of her mother in law which says Guvna Wannabe. Say HELLO
and donate if you can to support your community!

The Second Annual EcoFest was held at
Learning Gate in Lutz today with environmentally
friendly vendors, music, refreshments, displays,
workshops and more. A huge turn out for the event which
also had a Book Fair in their 100 year old log cabin
seemed to be quite a success. Fostering the artisitic
genius of John J Audubon, the passion for environmental
purity of Rachel Carson, and the committed activism of
Marjorie Stoneman Douglas, Learning Gate Community
School has designed a fresh approach to education.

school personnel, families, local community and experts
in fields which support our mission statement. To
Provide educational opportunities that accommodate

Lutz Brother-Sister Racers Win as 2010
season ends and 2011 season begins
Matt Tramontana, with sister Melissa,
have been drag racing together since their early teens.
Matt won the 2011 Season Opener at Sunshine Dragstrip
and sister Melissa, forged ahead with a win last season
that put both in the Top 10 of drivers in the Sportsman
class and earned them a spot on the Division Finals
team. Matt is currently leading the season Points in the
Sportsman category for this season. Matt and Melissa
drive Ford Mustang 5.0's that they both took to the
track at age 16. Prior to stepping into a 'door' car,
Melissa ran a 1/4 scale Junior Dragster affectionately
named 'Cowgirl Attitude.' She won many times with her
brother as her Crew Chief and lost the Track
Championship by a mere 10 points in her last season, the
result of a missed race to attend her high school
Homecoming Dance. Melissa was also the High School Track
Champion in 2007 and represented her home track at the
Division Finals where she runnered up in the Final round
of competition. Matt has consistently qualified for the
Division Finals every year since he started racing at
age 16 competing against seasoned veterans of the sport
and up and coming young drivers who transition from
Junior Dragster competition. Students as young as 8
years old can begin competitive driving and become quite
skilled by age 15 when they can step up and begin
competing in the door car division. Matt & Melissa grew
up in Lutz and attended school at Land O Lakes and
