Click >>> Here Kristen Vitone, of Rushe Middle School (on left), and her sister Stephanie Vitone, of Sunlake High School, tried to get the Alpacas to eat some hay at the National Alpaca Farm Day held at the Crystal Springs Alpaca Farm on September 27.That day is the one day all year that they are open to the general public offering farm tours, mini alpaca clinics, and yarn spinning lessons. Alpacas are cousins to the Llama and are native to the Andean Mountain range of South America, particularly Peru, Bolivia and Chile. Imported into the United States since 1984, they are becoming more popular because of their soft texture alpaca fiber that is sometimes compared to cashmere. The Crystal Springs Alpaca Farm is located at 1424 Crystal Springs Rd., Zephyrhills. For more information, call 813-779-3366 or go to www.csalpacas.com. Click >>> Here Boy Scout troop 148 and hundreds of Wesley Chapel volunteers participated in the nationwide Coastal Clean up Day on Saturday, September 20. Scouting groups, families, civic groups and youth clubs were out and about helping in the effort. Site captains Michelle Barbour and Deb Hamilton handed out trash bags and instructions. Wesley Chapel groups collected a half-ton of trash last year and countywide 1,250 volunteers collected 15.25 tons of trash. Even though Wesley Chapel is not close to the coast, litter and debris finds its way into the waterways, degrading the environment and killing wildlife. The long term benefit is to help keep pollutants out of our water supply. Groups or individuals in other parts of the county may contact Pasco County Recycling Coordinator Jennifer Seney at (727) 847-8041 for locations of clean ups in other parts of the county. Troop 148 Boy Scout’s (sponsored by Saint Mark the Evangelist Church) Demetrius Berkeley of John Long Middle School and Nick Novatne of Wiregrass Ranch High School found various items and as Scouts, know exactly what to do with a the ripped up American Flag found along State Route 56 in Wesley Chapel and planned on performing the ceremony when their clean up work was completed. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Our Lady of the Rosary Conference’s First Friends of the Poor Walk was held September 20, on the grounds of the church, located at Collier Parkway in Land O’Lakes. The Walk was held to celebrate the Society’s 175 years of service to the poor, and to encourage kindhearted people to become Friends of the Poor. Moneys raised on behalf of registered walkers will benefit those most in need in the community. The Walk, in conjunction with Cruisin’ for Christ Car Show was a fun-filled way that the Church and our community can come together in support of the less fortunate. SunTrust Bank, Taylor Rental, Hungry Harry’s Famous Barbecue, McDonalds, Sweetbay Supermarket, as well as others have helped to make this event a big success (many have participated the entire 17 years). Lutz-Land O’ Lakes Women’s Club volunteers help coordinate registration and door prizes.
