In Just Ten Weeks,
Thirteen Outstanding Individuals Raise Nearly $365,000 for Lifesaving
Cancer Research. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Suncoast Chapter
Announces Local 2011 Man & Woman of the Year!
A Hillsborough County woman and a Pasco County man raised more than
$119,500 for blood cancer research and patient services, making them the
winners of this year’s Man & Woman of the Year for The Leukemia &
Lymphoma Society’s Suncoast Chapter. The two winners,
Greg Lenners, General Manager of
The Shops at Wiregrass, and Nicole Scannell, Owner of Scannell
Productions, were announced the top local fundraisers at the Grand
Finale Gala, Saurday, April 9, 2011 at The Hyatt Regency Downtown after
accepting their nomination nearly ten weeks ago at the official kickoff
celebration at Michael Murphy Gallery in South Tampa. All thirteen
candidates were judged solely on their success in generating funds to
advance the mission of LLS. In this campaign, every dollar raised counts
as one “vote.” The candidates competed in honor of the Society’s Boy of
the Year, 5-year old, Stevie Monokandios and Girl of the Year, 3
year-old, Lucila Galban. Both children are blood cancer survivors and
sources of inspiration to our candidates and supporters in the
community. Man and Woman of the Year candidates and winners were
not alone in their fundraising efforts! Nicole Scannell, of Tampa, and
her husband, Jim Parker, rose just over $31,000; Greg Lenners, of Wesley
Chapel and his campaign team, consisting of three event chairs and five
committee members, rose over $88,000. “We all worked in the same office
and would communicate daily on the more critical items while continuing
to motivate each other throughout the campaign.” Greg’s impressive total
allows him to move into the national level competition for Man & Woman
of the Year. “Man & Woman of the Year is a great opportunity for
participants to network with other candidates while raising money for a
great cause,” said Julie Wills, the Suncoast Chapter’s executive
director. “Candidates gain personal and professional exposure in the
communities surrounding Tampa Bay while they help others.”

SR 56 Expansion and The Shops of
WiregrassGround
Breaking
By Faith Jordan-Masella of OurTownFLA.com
Several people
attended the Groundbreaking of State Road 56 Expansion on March 19. The
event was held near the JC Penney’s in Wesley Chapel. Several members
of the Greater Wesley Chapel of Commerce and the Central Pasco Chamber
of Commerce attended along with County Commissioners’ and business
leaders. A rendering of what the finished product will look like was
impressive. Tenant announcements were made for The Shops At Wiregrass.
Don Porter, who owned the land where the new mall will be located spoke
about a nearby road that used to be a dirt road where wagons traveled.
One advantage was that when there was a hole in the road, the driver
would just get his shovel and fill the hole himself. The land is also
where Porter raised his family over 35 years.
