The Land O’Lakes Little League held their Opening Ceremonies on February 21 at their new fields behind the library. It was quite an evening with almost 1,000 local children enrolled in the baseball and softball programs in attendance with their families. They enjoyed Hungry Harry’s Barbeque that was served by the Land O’ Lakes High School Varsity and Junior Varsity Softball Players, Raymond from The Tampa Bay Rays, fun, music courtesy of Brian Baxter, of Applied Sound Reinforcement, and some history lessons on how the Land O’ Lakes Little League got started. In 1971, the Land O’ Lakes Youth League was formed.

Ierna’s Heating and Cooling recently held an Art Contest in conjunction with the opening of the new Penguin Exhibit at the Lowry Park Zoo. Ierna’s donated $10,000 for the beautiful new exhibit. The winners in three age groups were given Three-Day Family Passes to the zoo and had their artwork framed by Alexandria Art Gallery. The Co-Op Artists of Alexandria Art Gallery judged the artwork. An exciting performing group for children is making its home in Pasco County. Harmony and Rhythm Performing Arts Academy is coming to four recreation centers around Pasco County. The program is for boys and girls aged 3-12 years old. Each weekly class meets for 45 minutes where the students learn to sing, dance, and act. They prepare 3 different shows throughout the year and focus on basic vocal training, drama, dance, microphone skills and music theory. Director Nina Bartleson stated, “This is a fun, educational program where gifted children shine and shy children bloom.”

Work begins on Sunlake Boulevard In Land O'Lakes

Work has begun on Sunlake Boulevard, a long-planned major north-south roadway between U.S. 41 and the Suncoast Parkway. Retail builder Amprop Development Corp. recently began clearing land for the six-lane road connecting State Road 54 with Mentmore Boulevard. Amprop plans to develop a Publix-anchored shopping center straddling Sunlake Boulevard. The plaza, Sunlake Commercial Center, won county approval last month on the condition that Amprop build the road. School officials want the new road - and its planned traffic signal - ready when Sunlake High's first senior class arrives in August. Sunlake High and Rushe Middle School lie just north of Amprop's land. They now use Mentmore Boulevard for access to S.R. 54. "We have a tight schedule to be done by school opening in August, but we have a very good contractor doing the work so we think we can make it," said Eric Schoessler, Amprop's managing partner.

Shirley Leung 15 years of Academy at the Lakes in Land O’ Lakes, was the winner in the Miss Dade City Pageant in the Junior Teen division on Jan 20.

Marisa Barbarise 11years, of Pine View Middle School in Land O’ Lakes, daughter of James and Nancy Barbanse, was the winner in the Miss Dade City Pageant in the Junior Miss division on January 20. The Little Miss Kumquat Festival Pageant was held at the auditorium of Pasco Middle School, in Dade City. The contestants, ages 1 through 17, competed in one of five age groups. Girls ages 7 through 17 wore long gowns while girls age 1 through 6, party dresses. Also, contestants were judged for onstage speeches and casual wear.

A celebration of Britney’s life will be held at Loyless Funeral Home on Friday, Dec.28, at 11 a.m. Friends and family will gather for two hours prior to the service. She will be laid to rest beside her father, Ken, who is buried at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell.

Britney Bartle, a recent Land O’Lakes High Graduate was All Conference in Tennis as a sophomore then had to take some time off to concentrate on fighting her cancer. She is shown here last April 16, when as a senior she was healthy, after two and a half years of treatment, in remission and back on the team and with her Gator mates at the River Ridge High School Courts. That is how we will remember her, a fighter and a lover of life and an inspiration to everyone that was lucky enough to know her. She is with her Dad now and in the loving hands of God.

Help needed to cover the shipping cost that Mr. Williams incurs on his “Support the Troops” project. Mr. Robert Williams (retired Navy) and his group sends out about 215 boxes each week to U.S. military units in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Qatar, and Kyrgyzstan. On a daily basis he will receive wish lists from the troops either via email or through their families or friends. “We do our best to fulfill those requests. The basic items we take for granted here can make a real difference in the quality of life our service personnel experience when deployed in combat zones and remote locations” said Williams. The packages they send out contain a variety of items popular with the troops, including coffee, snack foods, batteries, DVD’s, and personal toiletries. Some of these goods are donated by local businesses and organizations; others must be purchased to meet the need. “We are delighted to work with any company or organization interested in having a drive to collect items to send to our troops or to raise funds for postage” said Williams. Mr. Williams says that this is an on-going project therefore they must continue to seek the community’s help with the increasing postage expenses. The cost to ship one box can range from $20 to $45, depending on the contents and the APO or FPO address to which it is sent. Their postage costs alone run over $8,000 each month. “We always have boxes packed up and ready to ship out, but often lack the necessary funds to send them. We ask that any monetary contributions be made payable to: Make checks out to “Postmaster” and sent to “Support Our Troops,” P. O. Box 7560, Wesley Chapel, Florida 33544.

More than 20 local residents joined Captain Scott Keith and Gary Guy of Tampa Bay Inshore Charters for Get Out and Fish Tampa Bay, a free community fishing workshop. “This was a great day for the fishing community” said Captain Keith.

Dave Estabrook, (fifth from left) Principal of Charles S. Rushe Middle School was joined by Pasco County School Administrators, Principals, the Rushe family, business associates, friends, and chamber members during the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony with the Central Pasco Chamber of Commerce on September 21. As a photo of Chuck Rushe (the former Pasco County School District Chief Financial Officer who died of cancer last year) sat on the stage, people spoke about what a great man he was and how fitting it was that the $40 million school was named after him. The three-story building is beautiful and full of state of the art features including an Area of Refuge, which is a safe place to go in an emergency. An Assistant Principal is assigned to each floor and each floor has a Teacher Planning Area with a copy machine.

The Republican Club of Central Pasco held their general meeting May 16th, at Steve's Fountain View Restaurant and a major event for discussion was the 2007 fundraiser kick-off for The Fisher House of Tampa.

The 21-room Fisher House at the James A. Haley VA Medical Center will be the "home away from home" for families of military patients. Its dedication is slated for June 25th, but they expect to have guests, if not a full house by that time. The Fisher House is responsible for the on-going provision of comfort items and non-perishable foods and kindly accepts these items as well as monetary donations. The club will concentrate on Publix, Sweetbay, Target, and Bed, Bath & Beyond gift cards as well as the Fisher House's gift registries at both Target and Bed, Bath and Beyond.
