Pasco County students enjoy healthy
snacks from vending machines
Until a week ago, Rushe Middle School sixth-grader Joey Warren didn't know that kids could get snacks out of vending machines at school.

"I've only seen them on cartoon shows," Joey, 13, said, staring at the shiny new snack machines that had arrived in the cafeteria days earlier. "But I've never seen them in a school. They're cool and stuff."

The two vending machines generated instant buzz at Rushe Middle, where kids couldn't wait to plug in their quarters and dollars.

"They have things that kids would buy," said sixth-grader Kyralexa Alvira, 12.

Things like baked chips, fruit leather, and reduced calorie cookies and muffins, and even healthier items such as hummus, carrots and ranch dressing, yogurt and peanut butter.

"They meet the Alliance for a Healthier Generation snack guidelines," said Rick Kurtz, food and nutrition services director for Pasco County schools. "It's only healthy snacks that are available."

Pasco artist blends missionary work
with painting to spread the Gospel
From tampabay.com
Stan Crookall has been a painter since he was a child, but his mission of using his art to teach the Bible came later in life.

"I wondered what I could do to make things more interesting," Crookall said. "So I thought of my art: If I can adapt this to the Bible, it will create more interest. And I've been doing it ever since."

Crookall, 87, leads missionaries in South America who travel with his Bible-based paintings and do outreach in the schools, parks and other places where they can spread the Gospel to large groups of children. He also brings his paintings to Pasco County churches, prisons and parks.

"It's more than just viewing a painting, it's an explanation of a painting that makes it what it's all about," he said.

Pigs' pursuit of Oreos
 still brings smiles at fair
DADE CITY - If there's one thing a pig likes better than mud, it's an Oreo cookie.

Randy Ross has been telling people that — and that the famously filthy and intelligent animals have "no major sweat glands" — for 25 years.

In Ross's world, in fact, Oreos are to porkers what carrots are to rabbits. And his pigs have learned that the ability to race around a 150-foot track faster than your friends is rewarded with whole

Oreos. Losers get the crumbs.

 Pine View MS Haiti Donation

Pine View Middle School students from the Social Studies Department collected almost $1800 during a 10 day celebration of goodwill for the people of Haiti who are still suffering from the earthquake on January 12. Students from The Cheetahs raised almost half of the total.  When asked about why raising money was an important endeavor, one student responded, “It was a chance for us to exercise our civic duty and responsibility in a situation that was bigger than ourselves and bigger than our community.  We were regular people, helping other regular people.”   They gave a check to the American Red Cross to help with relief efforts. ....Pine View Middle School Social Studies instructor Mark Jarke stands with students from The Cheetahs who raised almost half of the $1800 raised for relief efforts in Haiti. Visually impaired Pasco teens learn
steps for Valentine's Day dance in Port Richey

Like most teenagers, they feel awkward and unsure on a dance floor. They don't know how to ask someone to dance, or what to say when the song ends. Unlike most teenagers, they can't see well enough to follow the steps or read the visual cues from their partners. They're visually impaired, these teens. But there they are on the floor — swinging, box-stepping, tangoing. Sway, sway, rock step. Good! To get them ready for a Valentine's Day dance this weekend sponsored by the Lighthouse for the Visually Impaired and Blind, a small group of Pasco teens got a crash course in cutting a rug.

Filming of horror movie
underway in Moon Lake in Pasco County
Bay News 9

By day, the small community of Moon Lake is like many others in Pasco County, but during recent nights, the town has been overrun by ghosts and zombies.    New Port Richey native Joe Davison is directing "As Night Falls,"  an independent horror movie about two parents who return from hell to punish children who are not in bed before nightfall.

He has set the movie in a 15-acre farm in Moon Lake. Davison said his hometown played a factor in his decision to set the movie in Moon Lake. "I'm from the area, so I thought, 'This is my biggest film to date,' I wanted to bring it back to where I grew up," he said.

The solution to sidewalk parking
in Pasco County is complicated
On its face, the parking rule Pasco County commissioners passed Tuesday seems to offer a solution to the sidewalk-blocking parking problems that plague county neighborhoods. The reality is more complicated, however.

The ordinance, passed with minimal discussion, gives people until mid-March to ask that the county's parking ban be lifted in their communities. It gives county traffic management officials the final say on where and when on-street parking can be allowed – from individual lots to alternating sides of the street.

So far, no one has taken commissioners up on their offer to lift the ban, said traffic operations manager Bob Reck.

Pasco student helps quake
 victims with donation drive
PASCO COUNTY (Bay News 9) -- A Dade City high school student is doing what she can to help the victims of the Haiti earthquake.

Cailan Harris is a senior at Pasco High School, and when she heard about the earthquake, she started encouraging her fellow students to donate whatever they could.

Now, when Harris comes to class, she finds bags of clothing, water and other supplies donated by fellow students.

After she picks up the donations from school, she brings them to her home to sort out. So far she has received several boxes of food and water and plenty of clothing, but she said she would like to get more before sending it to a relief organization like the Red Cross.

Wesley Chapel chamber hires former Tribune executive
The Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce board of directors has tapped local pastor and former Tampa Tribune executive David West as its executive director.

West replaces Sheri Goldberg, who resigned late last year. He said he is thrilled to take the reins of the chamber. "I have watched both it, and the Wesley Chapel community at large, develop from obscurity to prominence," he said in a news release. "Wesley Chapel is a fast-growing community with high energy and enthusiasm that is reflected in the composition of the chamber. Many beneficial activities are happening, and I am pleased to be a part of...

It was love at first sight, when he finally got that 1996 Mustang Cobra. Lipstick red, it came with mag wheels. A high performance engine purred inside. Jerry Sterner had dreamed of owning one since Ford introduced the sleek pony car in April 1964. Now, after two years in Vietnam, marriage, two babies and six years of missionary work in Kenya, he finally had his dream car.

Anna Falcone said she is happy to be the principal of her own school.

“It is exciting to be principal,” Falcone said. “I get to lead the teachers and the staff so the children can be the best they can be. I know my impact will be felt with the teachers and ultimately the children.”

Falcone started her career in Pasco as an intermediate teacher at San Antonio Elementary from 1998 to 2003. She then moved to Pine View Elementary School where she was assistant principal for five and a half years until last week, when she became principal of Sanders.

She said she is not the type of principal that just sits at her desk; instead she likes to work hands-on with the students...

Old favorite opens under new name
Tibbetts Lumber

Pasco Community West

For more than 30 years, Doug Ford of Land O’ Lakes has been buying lumber and building supplies from what once was Cox Lumber. He said when he learned the same owners were re-opening the store he was thrilled.

I was real excited,” Ford said. “I like the store because they cater to contractors more than the big chains like Home Depot and Lowe’s. They are unique because they are a full service lumber yard.”

Even though the name has changed, the people, products and services are the same as before when it was Cox Lumber. Tibbetts Lumber, located at the northwest corner of US 41 and SR 54, offers an extensive hardware department, a professional paint department, roof trusses, interior and exterior pre-hung doors and a complete line of lumber and lumber associated products.
