A radio-control airplane looped through the air, then buzzed past a group of onlookers. Four shots rang out. Smoke and flames burst from the plane's wing, which was hit twice.  Known as a Gnat, the plane was brought to the United States from England by Verizon. More challenging to shoot than a clay pigeon, Gnats will be one aspect of this weekend's 16th annual Sporting Clays Classic at Tampa Bay Sporting Clays, which benefits The Children's Home in Tampa...

Kids help kids go to school
in Afghanistan, Pakistan

When Alexis Bonilla, 11, and Emme Kuskin, 12, learned there were children in the world unable to go to school they decided to start a Pennies for Peace drive.

The change collected at Countryside Montessori in Land O’ Lakes will go to the Pennies for Peace foundation that builds schools in Afghanistan and Pakistan and buys school supplies. One penny can buy a pencil, two pennies can buy an eraser, 15 pennies can buy a notebook and $1 dollar will pay a teacher’s salary for a day.

Sue Grossman, upper level teacher at the school, said it started as a class project, but then Bonilla and Kuskin decided it needed to be a school-wide project. She said she originally chose the project because...

Ex-Buc Dunn helps first-time

homeowners in Pasco
Giving away down payments to 3 houses
Elois Adams walked to work in the rain to provide for her children.

Under an unrelenting sun this morning, Adams burst into tears.

Outside a car Adams exited on Taylor Avenue was Warrick Dunn, the civic-minded former Tampa Bay Buccaneers star, who is possibly as well known locally for his off-the-field work to help single-parent households achieve the dream of home ownership as for the yardage he amassed as an undersized running back in the National Football League.

Adams, her daughter, Ebony Adams, 27, and Adams' grandson, Frederick Adams Jr., 4, were among three families to receive $5,000 first-home down payments through Homes for the Holidays, a program of the Warrick Dunn Foundation...
