Governor Charlie Crist and MOSI welcomed the National Hispanic Scientist of the Year Award ceremony, developed in 2001 with a mission to recognize outstanding national Hispanic scientists who promote a greater public understanding of science and motivate an interest in science among today’s youth. There was a fire at Florida Gas & Electric in Land O'Lakes Thursday night near Land O'Lakes High School across from Connerton. A half dozen units showed up from as far away as Meadow Pointe Station #19 in Wesley Chapel to assist Land O'Lakes Station #23 battle the blaze.
Firefighters Mario Torres of Wesley Chapel and Andy Bruce of Land O'Lakes, first on the scene, who were told to stand down when, what was believed to be acetylene or propane tanks inside the building began to explode in the fire. The building was a total loss.

The Shops at Wiregrass Print Pink! Program starts with the County Commissioners touring the beautiful new addition to our growing communities.
The Shops of Wiregrass will have a Christmas tree and so much more. The County Commissioners and local Mayors toured the facility and the folks from You Do the Dishes helped start The Shops at Wiregrass Print Pink! Program. For a $50.00 donation to the American Cancer Society, you receive one clay tile for a personalized message imprint or hand imprint. The colorful 6x6-inch tiles will be signed, glazed and installed at The Shops at Wiregrass. The tile-imprinting event will be held on Saturday, November 1 and Sunday, November 2 from 10 AM - 5 PM during designated time slots. The staff at Pine View Middle School planned the 30th Anniversary of the school for one year. They wanted to make sure that everything turned out perfect. A good crowd showed up for some great food and a chance to see former teachers and administrators-many that started out their careers at the school. When Principal Kim Anderson started out the evening she greeted everyone and said that it was like a Homecoming and that all Homecoming’s needed a Queen so she presented Spanish Teacher Bertha Juanpere a crown and cape since she is the only one who has been at the school the entire thirty years. If the average is 300 children in each eighth grade graduating class, approximately 9,000 children have passed through the halls of Pine View Middle School...

The Pasco County Board of County Commissioners formally recognized two Pasco County soldiers killed in Iraq during a brief ceremony following the regular Board of County Commissioners meeting on July 22. At 11:45 a.m., the Commission introduced resolutions in honor of PFC Patrick Joseph “PJ” Miller of New Port Richey and Sgt. Marcus Mathes of Zephyrhills. Miller, a US Army soldier, died of combat injuries in Iraq on March 29. Mathes, also an Army soldier, died of combat injuries on April 28.

Padgett was born in San Juan, Philippines just outside of Manila and has thought about becoming a citizen since 9/11. After leaving the Philippines, her family moved to New Jersey, and after graduating from USF in 1976, she stayed in the Tampa Bay area. She has worked for Tampa Internist Dr. Jayant Gajera for the past twenty years. 714 applicants from over 90 countries became Naturalized Citizens at the Tampa Convention Center. They were presented with an American Flag, a book of American History, and a Certificate of Citizenship. Her friends at the Lake Padgett Estates East Clubhouse gave her a sash and a celebration party after the ceremony. She is pictured with her husband Jim Padgett.

Many cancer survivors walked around the track for the first lap of the Land O’ Lakes Relay For Life and then enjoyed good cuisine prepared for and donated by cancer survivor Ben Pumo, owner of Benedetto’s Ristorante Italiano. The event was held on May 9 and 10th at Sunlake High School. The Class of 2010 from Sunlake High School participated in the 2008 Relay For Life held on May 9 and 10th. Their school is now the host of the Relay in Land O’ Lakes.
The Interact Club from Land O’ Lakes High School headed up by teacher and coach Kris Keppel (on right) again participated in the Relay For Life that was held on May 9 and 10th at Sunlake High School. Missing from photo is Committee Member Nick Molinet who was out collecting money from the teams. The event changed locations from Pine View Middle School but several teams participated and made lots of money for the American Cancer Society.

There were definitely signs of springtime on stage last weekend, in Dade City at the first annual Fashion Show, Fundraiser, Silent Auction, and Luncheon, held at Clayton Hall and the Pasco County Fairgrounds on Sunday, April 27th, 2008. Local models looked like they stepped right off of the cover of Vogue magazine, while strutting across the stage and down the runway, all the while parading fun spring outfits, cocktail dresses, and evening gowns, from Beall's Department Store and a high end gown boutique in Jacksonville, Florida.

The Pasco County Law Enforcement had their 25th Annual 5K Torch Run to benefit the Special Olympics of Florida on April 23 starting at Starkey Boulevard and ending at Starkey Wilderness Park. Members from the Pasco Sheriff's Office, New Port Richey Police Department, Zephyrhills Police Department, and Dade City Police Departments along with cadets from the Law Enforcement/ Corrections Academy at PHCC participated. T-shirt sales were sold and over $8,000 was raised for Special Olympics Florida. Special Olympian Dakota Gignac, of Northwest Elementary in Hudson takes the torch from New Port Richey Corrections Officer Sgt. Kaii Gardner at the end of the run. Gignac placed first in the Special Olympics 50-yard dash and threw a softball 35 feet nine inches to earn him the spot. …Many Pasco County Law Enforcement personnel including Pasco County Undersheriff Colonel Al Nienhuis (on right) showed up for the 25th Annual 5K Torch Run to benefit the Special Olympics of Florida on April 23. The event was held at Starkey Park and raised over $8,000 for Special Olympics Florida. .…Members of the Zephyrhills and Hillsborough County Corrections Institute participated in the Pasco County leg of the 25th Annual 5K Torch Run to benefit the Special Olympics of Florida on April 23.

The Central Pasco Chamber of Commerce is considering moving the popular annual Land O’Lakes Flapjack Festival from it’s current location on Highway 41 to the Pasco County Fairgrounds located on Highway 52 in Dade City. Due to the growth of the festival, and proposed changes to the current site, a change of venue is necessary to keep the traditional Land O’ Lakes festival alive.
