Little League at the Land O' Lakes Recreation Center.
Land O Lakes Little League opened their spring season Saturday Feb
26 with a warm sunny day just suited for baseball! Eager little
leaguers anxiously awaited the start of the games on all fields. T-ballers,
most just four years old enjoyed the excitement of being a part of a
team, the cheer of the parents in the stands and of course, snacks
and refreshments afterwards! Many volunteers make up the league from
coaches to team moms, concession workers, announcers, those who work
on fundraising and board members who work throughout the season to
make it successful for all children to flourish. |

Katrina Carpenter is not just your Ordinary Girl |
|
Katrina
Carpenter is not your everyday little girl next door but she does have a
lot of company when it comes to little lady drag racers. I spoke with
Second Generation driver, nine year old Katrina Carpenter, who is
sponsored by her dad Martin Carpenters AC Company, MC Mechanical
Services about the sport. “Racing is not all about winning, it’s about
the fun and friendships you make along the way,” she says. Katrina also
pointed out that racing has taught her self confidence, respect for
others and how to be a good sport. Katrina is holding her own in 3rd
place in track points, just a few points out of the top spot with just a
few races under her belt for this season. A track Championship is
definitely within her grasp and her goal is to be a Division Champion.
Katrina’s younger brother Michael, who just turned 8 is always on hand
to watch his sister go down the track but is holding his own in the
Novice Division. Read More about Junior Drag Racing/See Photos on Target

Land O Lakes Resident helps Sheriff catch a thief |
|
Betty Stottlar of Land O Lakes was recently the victim of a purse
snatching at our area KMart on Collier Parkway. As Stottlar was getting
into her car on Feb 11, a man in dark clothing and a ski mask approached
her car in broad daylight around 11:15am. Stottlar remained calm after
the purse snatching and paid close attention to the details of the
incident.
She noted the color and type of vehicle, she honed in on the license
plate number and noted whether there were other passengers. She
immediately went inside the store and called the Sheriff. Recalling
important details of her incident, specifically the tag number, she was
able to lead police straight to the suspect. Here are some important
tips you should remember if you are a victim of an incident.
·
Remain calm and make mental notes of important details
·
don't be afraid to scream if someone is trying to rob or harm you
·
Park in lighted areas at night, park in areas where there are people
during the day
·
Conclude cell phone conversations prior to walking to your vehicle &
don't text! Be aware of your surroundings and don't be distracted to
make yourself an easy target
·
If you see something suspicious, report it! Your tips may help solve a
crime
·
Don't fight over your belongings. Your purse, wallet or car is not worth
your life.
·
Call for help immediately

Planting your Spring Vegetable |
Garden Seminar |
|
An experienced Master Gardener discussed how
to start and maintain an edible landscape in a recent Home
Depot Gardening Center. A Planting schedule was provided to
all those that attended. These monthly seminars held
throughout the community will focus on a variety of
gardening topics. Home Depot carries a variety of
'necessities' when planting your garden. Plant food, potting
mix, and fertilizer as well as a large assortment of seeds
and plants. You can start a home grown garden by building a
raised bed garden with just four 2x8x8's (untreated) lumber.
You can also grow veggies and herbs in potted containers.
Almost all vegetables and herbs require alot of sunlight so
patios, decks and porches are typically perfect spots!
Growing vegetables in potting mix provides controlled
nutrients that can make plants grow faster and remain
healthier, giving you the most produce for your efforts.
Home Depot has a free garden club to help you answer all
your gardening questions. Visit
www.homedepotgardenclub.com today to learn more about
all your gardening projects!

Lutz Brother-Sister Racers Win as 2010 |
season ends and 2011 season begins |
|
Matt Tramontana, with sister Melissa, have been drag racing together
since their early teens. Matt won the 2011 Season Opener at Sunshine
Dragstrip and sister Melissa, forged ahead with a win last season that
put both in the Top Ten of drivers and earned them a spot on the
Divisional Finals team. Matt is currently leading the season
Points in the Sportsman category for this season. Both Matt and Melissa
drive Ford Mustang 5.0's that both took to the track at age 16. Prior to
stepping into a 'door' car, Melissa ran a quarter scale Junior Dragster
affectionately named 'Cowgirl Attitude.' She won many times with her
brother as her Crew Chief and lost the Track Championship by a mere 10
points in her last season, the result of a missed race to attend her
high school Homecoming Dance. Melissa was also the High School Track
Champion in 2007 and represented her home track at the Division Finals
where she runnered up in the Final round of competition. Matt has
consistently qualified for the Division Finals every year since he
started racing at age 16 competing against seasoned veterans of the
sport and up and coming young drivers who transition from the Junior
Dragsters. Students as young as 8 years old can begin competitive
driving and become quite skilled by age 15 when they can begin competing
in the door
car division. Matt & Melissa grew up in Lutz and attended
school at Land O Lakes and Sickles High Schools. If you would like to
learn more about drag racing in our local area, visit
www.sunshinedragstrip.com
or if you would like to bring the family out for an evening of
excitement, gate admission is $12 for adults. Schedule is posted on the

Dr Joann Daniels of Central Pasco Veterinary Care |
promotes Pet Oxygen Masks |
|
After
responding to house fires and volunteering to help the animal victims,
Dr. Jo Ann Daniels has made it her mission to obtain Pet Oxygen Masks
for Pasco County fire rescue first responders. These special masks can
be fitted to human oxygen supplies to help pets affected by smoke
inhalation to save lives. Just as important as the proper equipment is
the training of its use. Understanding how to administer oxygen therapy
to animals and how to interact with a stressed pet will help first
responders react to distressed pets quickly and safely. Dr. Daniels has
taught 6 classes so far, and is working toward training additional first
responders. Pasco County Fire Rescue has several sets of Pet Oxygen
Masks that Dr. Daniels donated, and several from a rescue group.
However, it is essential to obtain a set of masks for every fire truck
and we need your help. |

In the
aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attacks, he received a
lot of attention with his singing of "God Bless America", which
he sang at the memorial events for the fallen. This led to an
offer of formal training from Placido Domingo. He has now
recorded several albums, appeared in opera and in symphony
concerts, and performs in support of numerous charities. They
finished their 107 US City Tour to entertain at the Groves
because his Mother lives there and the community has adopted him
as their own. “It was a great show and capacity crowds at both
performances enjoyed them immensely” said Groves event
Coordinator Donna Hartwick. Rodriguez performed
last month with his family in Greymouth, New Zealand for
families of the 29 miners killed in underground explosions this
past November.

Freedom HS vs Sickles HS |
Girls Basketball
|
|
It was almost a repeat of last year when the Freedom High girls
basketball team suffered an early exit in the Class 5A-District
9 tournament.
With 2.7 seconds left in overtime in the district semifinals
Feb. 2, Patriots senior point guard Kaitlynn Pacholke stepped to
the line and nailed a free throw, giving her squad a 53-52 lead
against Hillsborough High. Freedom (20-5) held on to win by the
same score, avenging a loss to the Terriers (9-13) in last
year’s district tournament that ended its season. The Patriots
went on to defeat Sickles High 68-65 in the finals Feb. 4. |

Lost Pres. Reagan Tape found in time |
for
100th Birthday celebration |
|
Fifteen years before there was a Community website called
OurtownFLA.com, there was a Community Cable Channel that was
run by Anthony Masella Jr. in Kent, Ohio that covered local
events of interest for the community and “cablecasted” them
on the cable system. After four years of covering events for
the community using a video camera the end had come for this
experiment in journalism. The cable company was to be sold
at the end of 1984 and Masella decided to relocate to Land
O’Lakes but before he did, he had one last assignment, the
1984 Presidential Campaign Ohio Whistle stop tour by
President Ronald Wilson Reagan. In his move to Florida the
tape of Reagan, only seen once, was lost and presumed taped
over and lost forever.... A quarter of a
century later, at the end of a very long volleyball tape,
the historic footage was found. “I couldn’t believe what I
was seeing, it was like going back in time” said Masella. It
was the last event I covered for fifteen years, till I
started OurtownFla.com in Pasco County, since then I had the
opportunity to cover President Bush, Governors’ Mitt Romney
and Sarah Palin and Senators’ Bill Nelson and Marco Rubio
but Reagan was the most impressive” he said. “Things had
been bad for a very long time when he took over, it was as
if we fell into a hole on November 22, 1963 and never
stopped falling. To a generation of young people he
represented hope and optimism for the future.” Said Masella.
The 25 minute tape will run on the award winning local
community website
www.OurtownFLA.com following the Super bowl to
commemorate President’s Reagan’s 100th birthday
and can be viewed there all month on the website via
YouTube.
